Deborah A.
Johnson is a veteran educator with 31 years of experience as
a teacher, special education supervisor, special education
director, DAEP principal, and central office administrator
supporting DAEPs and a special education program for
students with severe disabilities presenting with
challenging behaviors. She originated from Louisiana where
she taught for seven years before moving to Houston, Texas.
Once in Houston, she worked in special education with
Houston ISD for 15 years prior to adding DAEP to her
experience while working for Harris County Department of
Education (HCDE). She
has currently retired as Senior Director – Special
Schools Division with HCDE. Ms. Johnson has been a member of
TAAE since 2001. She has actively served on the conference
committee and the scholarship/awards committee. While never
aspiring to be a principal or imagining working with
alternative programs, she reports her experience as
principal of Highpoint North, a DAEP in HCDE, as one of her
most rewarding educational experiences. You can often times
hear her say of the students served in the DAEP, “They’re
not bad kids. They are good kids making bad choices.

A member of TAAE since 2002, Marsha served five years on the
TAAE Legislative Committee, two years serving as the chair
of the committee. In 2009, she was elected Treasurer of the
organization and served on the board overseeing the Finance
committee, reporting to the board and TAAE members the
financial status of the organization.
Marsha Burris has been in education for 23 years. After
working for many years as a “staff” accountant in the
Dallas/Ft. Worth area, she stumbled into education when she
began volunteering at her children’s elementary school in
Birdville ISD. Working as an educational aide for 5 years,
she went back to college and earned her BSIS in 1993 from
East Texas State University-Texarkana. She completed her
student teaching and immediately began her career as a
teacher in Texarkana ISD at Westlawn Middle School. She
spent six years as a 6th grade Science Teacher
serving as Science Department Chair and campus Team Leader
and earned her M.S. from Texas A&M University-Texarkana in
2000. She served one year as the testing, textbook,
technology coordinator for district’s middle school while
continuing her education for Principal Certification. In
2000, she became the principal of OPTIONS Academic
Alternative High School in Texarkana ISD.
Marsha Burris was chosen by Raise Your Hand Texas in July
2008 and June 2010 to attend Harvard’s Graduate School of
Education – Urban School Leaders Institute and Leading
Change in the 21st Century for High School
Principals Institute. She is a member of the Texarkana
Chamber of Commerce and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Marsha has been married for 27 years to Ricky Burris and
they have three wonderful children and two beautiful
granddaughters. She is an active member of FBC-Texarkana
where she sings in the church choir.
Marsha believes it is her mission and responsibility to
ensure every student the opportunity to graduate from high
school so they can become responsible productive members of
their community and work place.
When asked about her feelings being elected to this position
and what she hopes to accomplish in the position. – Marsha
said she has already started work on setting up the TAAE
legislative committee members and is anxious to get the ball
rolling on contacting our Texas State House and Senate
Representatives throughout the state to let them know – We
cannot leave one Texas student behind in education.
They must invest now in the future of our students and
quoting her favorite baseball team the Texas Rangers slogan
“It’s time!” |

Emily Feagan has been in the field of
education for the past 21 years in Bryan ISD. She began
working with at-risk students through a summer program
called Youth Opportunities Unlimited at Texas A&M in 1988.
She taught English at the traditional high school for three
years before moving to the alternative campus in the Fall of
1993. During her 17 years at the alternative campus, she
taught in the self-paced classroom for 14 years; organized
student testing and curriculum as the Instructional
Specialist; supported the director as an Assistant Principal
and lead the campus for one year as the Dean of Lamar
Alternative High School. Unfortunately, budget changes
impacted the campus and the program was closed in June 2010.
Currently, Emily is an Assistant Principal at Rudder High
School in Bryan. As a TAAE member, Emily has functioned as a
Conference Committee Co-Chair, Conference Committee Chair
and recently Vice-President. |

April Coker has been involved in education for the past 26
years, 19 of those in alternative education. For 16 years
she directed and taught a self-contained classroom at
Lindale ISD. Named by her students during Operation Desert
Storm, Operation Graduation is a school within a school in
East Texas. After seeing her own children graduate, she went
to work for Mesquite ISD as a DAEP teacher at the Learning
Center. She recently accepted the position of Mabank ISD’s
DAEP Coordinator. Since earning her master’s in educational
administration in 1997.
A TAAE member since 1991, April has served as state
secretary, vice president, president elect and President. Besides alternative
education, April enjoys spending time with her husband Jimmy
and grown children Matt and Natalie. April is also the
author of I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas: A Holiday
Survival Guide, published in 2006 by PublishAmerica. |

Linda
Kelly is a veteran educator with experience as a teacher, librarian,
and administrator with more than thirty years of experience in a
variety of school and community settings. She has been a teacher at
both the elementary and secondary levels, and has taught in both
“regular” and alternative school settings. Prior to her retirement
in 2004, Linda served as both teacher and Assistant Principal in the
Alternative Learning Program at Goose Creek CISD in Baytown for over
23 years. She also served as the coordinator for the Texas High
School Completion and Success Grant for Goose Creek CISD in 2004
-2005. As a TAAE member since the early 90s, Linda has been active
as the chair of the Bylaws Committee, and under her guidance, the
TAAE bylaws were completely revised and rewritten. Linda’s service
to TAAE continued with her activities as President Elect., President
& Past President Currently,
Linda is beginning her first year as TAAE’s Secretary. |

Keith Adams has
27 years of education experience and is currently the
Principal of West Mesquite HS in Mesquite ISD. Keith has
been a classroom teacher in middle school, high school and
adult education. His administration experience consists of
middle/high school AP, Principal of Mesquite Academy (school
of choice) and his current assignment at West Mesquite.
Keith has been a member of TAAE since 1995 and has served as
Legislative Chair, Treasurer, President-Elect, President and
is the current Treasurer for the 2011 term.

Joe McCullough,
TAAE’s Executive Director, is a graduate of the University
of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Journalism degree. He
spent more than ten years working with the Austin American
Statesmen as director of the Classified Advertising
Department before joining Association & Society Management,
Inc. (ASMI)--TAAE’s association management company--in 1988.
Assuming his duties as Executive Director for TAAE in 1996,
five years after the birth of the organization, Joe is
TAAE’s “Go-to Man” in the realm of managing our association
and helping us to grow into a strong, viable organization of
nearly 1,000 members across Texas and neighboring states. |
